The Head
Ms Rosie McColl, MA (Oxon), MPhil (Trinity College Dublin)
(Bristol University) from Brighton Girls, England
Ms McColl took up the role of Head of Harrow International School Hong Kong in August 2025, having relocated from the UK where she held the position of Head of Brighton Girls school.
Ms McColl studied English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford and went on to complete an M.Phil. in Anglo-Irish Literature at Trinity College Dublin. She gained her Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Bristol University before embarking on a teaching career that has rewarded her with leadership roles at some of the UK’s top independent schools.
She began her career at Berkhamsted School in 2003, rising through the ranks to take up deputy headship at Berkhamsted in 2014. In 2017 she moved to Wellington College as deputy head before moving to the south coast to take up the role of Head of Brighton Girls.
With a family connection to Hong Kong that spans 26 years, Ms McColl is delighted to be part of the Harrow Hong Kong family. She is joined by her husband and son.
Ms McColl is a keen musician and sportswoman. She enjoys swimming, running, hiking and reading during her free time.
Senior Deputy Head (Whole School)
Ms Laura Yandell (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Goldsmiths University of London & UCL) from Ark Greenwich Free School, England
Ms Laura Yandell joined Harrow Hong Kong in 2019 and has since held a number of senior leadership positions, culminating in her appointment as Senior Deputy Head (Whole School) where she serves as the operating Head of the School. In this role, she provides strategic and operational leadership across the School, overseeing whole-school improvement, curriculum innovation, pastoral development, organisational effectiveness, and long-term strategic planning.
Originally trained as an actor, Ms Yandell graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a BA (Hons) in Acting before completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and a Master’s degree in Education at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her Master’s research focused on women in leadership within schools, a passion that continues to shape her professional work today. Ms Yandell was also delighted to be awarded her National Professional Qualification in Headship (NPQH) in September 2026 from the University of Central London (UCL).
Prior to joining Harrow Hong Kong, Ms Yandell served as Deputy Headteacher responsible for Teaching, Learning and Curriculum at a secondary school in London. She has also held a range of middle leadership positions across several schools in the UK, developing extensive expertise in teaching and learning, curriculum design, staff development and educational leadership.
At Harrow Hong Kong starting in 2022, Ms Yandell successfully led a significant whole-school review over a three-year period. This work included the comprehensive review and redevelopment of the Prep School curriculum, the enhancement of pastoral systems and pupil support structures, and the embedding of the School’s Futures and Super-Curricular Activities (SCA+) programme within the curriculum. Through this work, she has helped ensure that pupils develop the knowledge, skills and character required to thrive in an increasingly complex and unpredictable world. She is particularly interested in developing future-focused educational experiences that prepare young people not only for academic success, but also for meaningful and fulfilling lives beyond school.
A strong advocate for greater representation of women in educational leadership, Ms Yandell has been actively involved with the global WomenEd movement for many years. Following her work with WomenEd in the United Kingdom, she is now a founding member of WomenEd Hong Kong, creating opportunities for networking, mentoring and professional development for women working in education across the region.
Outside school, Ms Yandell enjoys theatre, live music, singing, reading and travel as well as keeping at the forefront of the latest research in education. Having lived and worked internationally for a number of years, she particularly values the rich cultural experiences that Hong Kong and Asia offers and considers it a privilege to help shape the next generation of global citizens and leaders.
Head of Upper School
Ms Hannah Lowe (University of Nottingham & University of Sussex) from Brighton Girls GDST
Ms Lowe brings extensive academic and pastoral leadership experience from both the UK and international education sectors.
A graduate of the University of Nottingham with a BSc (Hons) in Geography, she later completed a postgraduate Chemistry qualification and PGCE at the University of Sussex. She has held several senior leadership roles, including Senior Deputy Head at St Christopher’s Prep School, part of the Brighton College family of schools, where she oversaw school operations, pastoral care, and staff development. Most recently, she led the co-curricular programme at Brighton Girls GDST, helping pupils develop confidence, character, and leadership beyond the classroom.
Internationally, Ms Lowe served at The Banda School in Nairobi as Director of Teaching and Learning and later Deputy Head Academic. These roles reinforced her commitment to creating engaging learning environments that combine academic excellence with creativity and curiosity.
A strong advocate for holistic education, she is passionate about student leadership, outdoor education, and the co-curriculum, believing these experiences build resilience, critical thinking, and confidence.
Outside school, Ms Lowe enjoys sport, adventure, and exploring new cultures. She is delighted to be joining the Harrow Hong Kong community and contributing to its continued success.
Head of Lower School
Mr Brendan Shanahan (University of Liverpool) from St Barnabas’ CE Primary School & Nursery, England
Mr Shanahan took up his position as head of the Lower School at Harrow School Hong Kong on 17th August 2020.
Mr Shanahan graduated from the University of Liverpool with a BA (Hons) degree in Social & Economic History in 2005. He then completed his PGCE at Leeds Beckett University before starting teaching in Kirklees. Mr Shanahan has held a range of posts in his career including leading on PE, Maths, English, Safeguarding, Curriculum, Standards and Assessment. He was a headteacher in Westminster, where he was also the secretary of the Westminster South group of schools, before taking up the role as Head of Lower School at Harrow International School Hong Kong.
He is a keen sportsman and represented his University at football, lacrosse, hockey and rugby league. He also represented Huddersfield and Yorkshire playing Gaelic Football. He also enjoys hiking and has completed all four of the Hong Kong trails.
Head of Sixth Form
Mr Jonny Franks (Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge) from Whittle School & Studios Shenzhen, China
Mr Franks attended the Royal Grammar School High Wycombe before studying Philosophy at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge. After graduation he joined the Religious Studies Department at Wycombe Abbey School in the UK, gaining Qualified Teacher Status as part of the Graduate Teacher Programme. He was appointed as Director of Higher Education at Wycombe Abbey in 2014 before taking on the role of Director of Sixth Form in 2016, overseeing the academic progress, wellbeing and higher education applications of around 200 senior students each year.
After a total of 13 years at Wycombe Abbey, he moved to Shenzhen, China, in 2019 as founding Upper School Division Head at a new start-up school, Whittle School & Studios. He was later appointed Vice-Principal of the school, a wide-ranging role which included responsibility for all expatriate teacher matters as well as compliance issues, teacher recruitment and retention and accreditation.
Mr Franks joined Harrow Hong Kong as Deputy Head (Co-Curricular and Organisation) in 2022 and took on the Head of Sixth Form role in 2024, returning to his passion for helping pupils fulfil their intellectual potential, flourish as young people, and gain entry into the best universities and colleges across the world.
Mr Franks lives on the school site with his wife, Isabel, who was born in Hong Kong, and their daughter. They enjoy hiking, travelling and exploring, usually with their naughty toy poodle, Biscuit.
Head of Early Years
Mrs Sophie Purnell (University of Surrey Roehampton & St Mary’s University)
Demonstrating her commitment to excellence in early childhood education, Sophie recently completed the National Professional Qualification for Early Years Leadership, leading a project focused on implementing a wellbeing and involvement assessment tool for Early Years staff.
Having grown up in Australia, Hong Kong and England, Sophie developed a strong appreciation for diverse cultures and international education from an early age. After beginning her teaching career in England, she pursued her passion for international education, working in leading international schools before returning to Hong Kong in 2020 as a Reception teacher at Harrow International School Hong Kong.
Throughout her career, Sophie has held a range of leadership and teaching roles. Most recently, she played a leading role in the opening of Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten as Deputy Head. She enjoyed the opportunity to establish a new school community, drawing on her experience to support curriculum development, staff growth and the creation of a nurturing environment in which young children could thrive.
As Head of Harrow Little Lions Gold Coast, Sophie is passionate about providing exceptional early childhood education and dedicated to creating a nurturing environment where children thrive. She believes that wellbeing, curiosity and strong partnerships with families are the foundations of a successful and rewarding learning journey.
Deputy Head (Academic)
Mr. James Brewer (Queen’s University Belfast) from Epsom College in Malaysia
Mr Brewer hails from Londonderry, Northern Ireland where he attended school at Foyle and Londonderry College. He graduated with a BSc in Physics before completing a MSc in Electronics and PGCE in Science, all from Queen’s University Belfast.
His first teaching post was teaching Physics at Bexley Grammar School in Bexley, Kent. In Bexley, he gained experience in the roles of Head of Physics and Head of Houses. Mr Brewer thought London was far from home until he moved to the Middle East to Qatar International School in Doha, Qatar. He was part of the senior leadership team that developed QIS into a teaching and learning school. He then moved further east to Epsom College in Malaysia, Epsom was his introduction into boarding school. He thoroughly enjoyed the additional aspects that boarding school brings to teaching and to the students’ school experience.
Mr Brewer enjoyed playing various sports at school, university and club level. He played rugby with Queen’s and City Of Derry and cricket with Brigade. After hanging up his boots, he coached rugby and cricket in schools as well as regularly playing golf.
Mr Brewer is married to Mrs Mitchell, who is Housemistress of Fry House, and their two children Noah and Ella who both attend the lower school.
Deputy Head (Co-Curricular & Organisation)
Mrs Sabrina Peck (University of East Anglia) from Jane Austen College, England
Mrs Peck graduated from the University of East Anglia with a BA Honours degree in Philosophy. Having gained work experience in the finance, charity and the outdoor education sectors; she pursued her vocation for teaching and completed her PGCE in Religious Education at the University of East Anglia. Her early teaching experience was in the UK state sector, eventually taking on the role of Head of Humanities at Jane Austen College free school. She was proud to play a key role in creating a Trust-wide Philosophy and Religious Studies curriculum, working with members of the subject community to create and adopt new pedagogical approaches to the subject which have had a national impact in the UK.
Prior to taking on the role of Deputy Head (Co-Curricular and Organisation), Mrs Peck was the Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies for five years, leading a thriving and innovative department which has tripled uptake of the subject at A Level, gained outstanding results and regularly sent pupils to elite universities to study Philosophy and Theology.
In taking on the Co-curricular role, Mrs Peck builds on her work in school as Director of the Model United Nations, leading on the annual ‘HARMUN’ conference. She was also co-leader on the Cambodia Leadership in Action week expedition and re-established the Harrow Debate team.
Mrs Peck is unashamedly passionate about the value of the Harrow Horizons programme as an integral part of pupils’ holistic education. She firmly believes that the essential skills, experiences and values developed through a high-quality super-curriculum play a vital role in setting apart a good education from an exceptional one.
She is proud to have developed the School’s holistic provision through the launch of the Harrow Diploma, the introduction of SCA Pathways, which enable pupils to pursue their interests and development more purposefully, and the establishment of the Futures programme, where pupils receive bespoke guidance and opportunities to develop essential skills, nurture passions and consider future career aspirations.
Mrs Peck lives on site with her husband, Mr Andrew Peck, a Lower School Teaching Assistant and her children are Harrow Hong Kong alumnae, who have gone on to study at top universities in the UK. In her spare time, she enjoys an active lifestyle, including yoga, hiking and running, as well as travelling throughout Asia.
Deputy Head (Curriculum, Teaching and Learning)
Ms. Freya Crofton (University of Leeds) from Saltus Grammar School, Bermuda
After graduating from the University of Leeds with a BA (Honours) in English Language and Literature, Ms Crofton completed a Graduate Diploma in Law at BPP before returning to the University of Leeds to complete her PGCE.
She began her career in England, teaching English and leading EAL as well as becoming heavily involved in extracurricular Music and Musical Theatre. She developed a passion for pedagogy, as well as for coaching and mentoring staff.
Ms Crofton’s first international teaching post was in Bermuda, where she taught American AP courses alongside the British curriculum, coached Debate and Public Speaking teams for national and international competitions and completed her NPQML.
Ms Crofton joined Harrow Hong Kong in 2016 and took on the role of Head of English the following year. After 5 years in this role, and experience as Associate Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning), she was appointed Assistant Head (Academic) in 2022. Ms Crofton is committed to the School’s vision of Educational Excellence for Life and Leadership and is passionate about ensuring that all pupils have the best learning experience possible, as well as developing the skills for success both in exams and in the world beyond Harrow Hong Kong.
Ms Crofton is very enthusiastic about Shakespearean Tragedy and has co-authored an A-Level critical guide to ‘Hamlet’. She also enjoys choral singing, the theatre, and travel.
Deputy Head (Pastoral, Boarding and Safeguarding)
Mrs Allison Spillman (University of Exeter & University of Greenwich) joins us from the Royal High School in Bath
Mrs Spillman graduated from the University of Exeter with a BSc Honours degree in Psychology. After having her children, she completed a PGCE in Mathematics at Greenwich University, and began her career teaching in schools across London and Kent, before moving to Caterham School as Head of Department. This role introduced her to boarding and so began her real passion for the pastoral and boarding aspects of school life. She joined Wycombe Abbey as a Housemistress, and she was soon Head of Boarding and DSL, leading a boarding house of 84 boarders in year 7!
In 2019, she joined the Founding Faculty of a Huitong School in Shenzhen, where she was Dean of Students, overseeing the opening and establishment of the school and its boarding provision. This enabled her to experience both a wonderful new culture but also gave her the experience that international students have when they travel overseas.
Mrs Spillman has a keen interest in adolescent mental health and wellbeing, and for her Masters’ Degree dissertation, she researched the effects of the Covid pandemic on the social and emotional development of children. She also presented a lecture on the effects of social media on teenage mental health at a TEDX Conference.
Mrs Spillman enjoys hiking with her husband and their dog, swimming and reading. She feels incredibly privileged to be joining Harrow International School Hong Kong where she can bring all her experience to ensure that the students are well supported and nurtured during their time here.
Assistant Head (Senior School, Pastoral & Wellbeing)
Ms Naina Nightingale (University of Reading) from Holland Park School, England
Ms Nightingale was born in Hong Kong and was raised between Hong Kong, Kenya and the UK. She was, therefore, thrilled to return to Hong Kong in 2019 to take up the position of Senior Girls Boarding House Mistress at Harrow Hong Kong, a position she still holds alongside being Assistant Head Pastoral and Wellbeing (Senior School). Ms Nightingale graduated from the University of Reading with a degree in English and Drama, before completing her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the Institute of Education (UCL) in London. Her teaching career began in a Central London school, where she quickly developed a passion for pastoral care, alongside her academic responsibilities.
Ms Nightingale held various pastoral roles throughout her career, such as Designated Safeguarding Lead and Manager of Student Welfare, before coming to Harrow Hong Kong and is dedicated to fostering a nurturing environment for pupils. Her central belief is that pupils who feel supported in their emotional and social wellbeing are empowered to achieve academic success and be better equipped for life beyond school. This guiding principle informs her approach to education, emphasising the importance of holistic development.
Alongside working with the young people at Harrow Hong Kong, Ms Nightingale enjoys music, theatre, travelling and spending time in nature. She is passionate about the environment and loves hiking with her husband, daughter and their two rescue dogs.
Assistant Head (Prep School, Pastoral & Wellbeing)
Ms. Kim Gration (Magdalen College, University of Oxford) from Luanda International School, Angola
Ms Gration graduated from the University of Oxford (Magdalen College) with a degree in Music and then went on to La Sainte Union College of Higher Education to do a PGCE.
After teaching at two schools in Portsmouth and running the extra curricular music programme, she left the UK to teach abroad “for a couple of years” and is still waiting to go back! Ms Gration set up the English programme at Komeetta School in Espoo, Finland and enjoyed a year teaching in New York at the United Nations International School as a Fulbright Scholar. She moved to Lucaya International School in Freeport, Bahamas as a Y6 teacher and then set up a Middle School programme there for Y7 – 9. After four years, she moved to Luanda International School, Angola, first as a Music Teacher and then as an IB Curriculum Coordinator.
Ms Gration moved to Harrow Hong Kong in 2015 as Head of Individual Needs. She was then appointed as founding House Mistress of Anderson House in 2018.
When not teaching, Ms Gration enjoys spending time with her children, one who graduated from Harrow in 2022 and one who currently studies at the school. She also loves exploring the hiking trails of Hong Kong and listening to and playing music.
Ms Gration is passionate about Wellbeing and Pastoral Care and is excited to take up the role of Assistant Head Pastoral and Wellbeing.
Assistant Head (Teaching, Learning & Continuing Professional Development)
Mrs Victoria Marshall (University of Manchester) from King George V School, Hong Kong
Mrs Marshall completed her BA (Honours) Geography at the University of Manchester and took a few years out to travel and work in the construction industry, helping to build affordable housing in the UK. She then taught in London for 6 years as a Geography teacher and E-learning Coordinator, using this time to complete her MA in Geography Education part time at UCL Institute of Education. She also climbed the ranks of the RAF CCF ending her time as a Pilot Officer, held responsibility as an Examinations Officer and undertook external A Level marking.
She moved to Hong Kong in the Summer of 2018 and took up a maternity cover at King George V ESF before joining Harrow Hong Kong for the Summer Term 2018-2019 as a Geography teacher. Mrs Marshall enjoyed two years as Assistant Housemistress for Parks (2019-2021) before taking time away to start her family. Since then she has been a tutor in Anderson house and had the role of Head of Upper School Digital Learning since 2021 where her involvement in CPD really started to develop. In the academic year 2023-24 she took up the role of Acting Head of Geography (maternity cover) and completed her NPQLT looking at how to effectively teach online research skills.
When not working Mrs Marshall enjoys road and trail running and sewing her own clothing in a bid for a more sustainable future.
Deputy Head of Lower School (Pastoral, Co-Curricular & Organisation)
Mrs. Lauren Berner (Sheffield Hallam University & University of Leicester) from Discovery School Academy Trust, England
Mrs Berner joined Harrow Hong Kong in August 2017 and has held a number of leadership positions across the Lower School. These have included Assistant Head of Lower School (Pupil Progress), where she led the strategic development of assessment and data systems to enhance teaching, learning and pupil outcomes. She was subsequently appointed Deputy Head (Pastoral, Co-Curricular and Organisation), where she provides strategic leadership for pastoral care, co-curricular activities, the House system and pupil development across the Lower School. Through her work, Mrs Berner is committed to ensuring that every pupil is known, valued and supported to thrive both academically and personally.
Mrs Berner graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BA (Hons) in Primary Education and qualified as a teacher in 2006. She later completed a Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning at the University of Leicester, further developing her expertise in educational research and evidence-informed practice. Driven by her passion for inclusion and supporting all learners to achieve their potential, she subsequently completed the National Award for SEND Coordination (SENDCo).
Prior to joining Harrow Hong Kong, Mrs Berner was a member of the Senior Leadership Team at two schools in Leicestershire, where she developed extensive experience in pupil wellbeing, inclusion and school improvement. She has also completed both the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) and, more recently, the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). In 2015, Mrs Berner became a Specialist Leader of Education, supporting and advising schools on a range of strategic priorities, including inclusion, leadership development and raising pupil outcomes.
Since joining Harrow Hong Kong, Mrs Berner has played a key role in strengthening pastoral provision and wellbeing support for pupils. She has led initiatives focused on inclusion, safeguarding, attendance, pupil voice and personal development, ensuring that every child is equipped with the confidence, resilience and character needed to flourish both within and beyond the classroom. She is particularly passionate about creating school cultures in which pupils feel a strong sense of belonging and where wellbeing is recognised as a foundation for successful learning and lifelong achievement.
Mrs Berner lives in one of Harrow Hong Kong’s senior boarding houses, Peel House, with her husband, Mr Berner, and their three sons. As both a school leader and boarding house resident, she greatly values the unique opportunities that boarding life provides for building strong relationships with pupils and families. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family, travelling and exploring different cultures, and maintains a keen interest in research and developments in education, wellbeing and inclusion.
Deputy Head of Lower School (Academic)
Ms. Dawn Chambers (Dublin City University) from Derwentwater Primary School, England
Ms Dawn Chambers graduated from Dublin City University with a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts specialism in History. She spent eight years living and teaching in London, where she held a number of curriculum leadership positions, before joining Harrow Hong Kong in January 2019. She is passionate about the opportunities a Harrow education offers and is committed to our drive for Educational Excellence for Life and Leadership, ensuring that every child is equipped to achieve their full potential.
Her leadership at Harrow Hong Kong began as Humanities Coordinator, working with the wider curriculum team to develop and implement a bespoke and rigorous curriculum for our pupils. In August 2021 she was appointed Assistant Head of Lower School (Pupil Progress), a role in which she embedded assessment within teaching and learning and used data to support every pupil’s pursuit of excellence.
In August 2026 she was appointed Deputy Head of Lower School (Academic). In this role she leads the academic provision of the Lower School, overseeing the curriculum and the quality of teaching and learning, with a focus on ensuring that every pupil is challenged, supported and inspired. Alongside her leadership responsibilities, she continues to teach across the Lower School and greatly values the time she spends in the classroom with our pupils.
Assistant Head of Lower School (Pupil Progress)
Mr Sam Hobbins (St Mary’s University)
Mr Hobbins completed a Bachelor of Education in Physical and Sport Education at St Mary’s University before going on to complete a PGCE in Primary Education. He began his teaching career at Marshgate Primary School in Richmond, London, where he developed extensive leadership experience as Physical Education, Science and English Coordinator. During his time there, he led curriculum developments across multiple subject areas, supported colleagues in refining teaching practice and helped drive improvements in pupil outcomes.
In 2020, Mr Hobbins moved to Hong Kong and joined Harrow International School Hong Kong as Lower School English Coordinator. Over the next five years, he led the strategic development of English across the Lower School, working closely with staff on curriculum design, assessment and the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning experiences. His work also included developing approaches to monitoring pupil progress and supporting colleagues in using assessment effectively to meet the needs of all learners.
Throughout his career, Mr Hobbins has been passionate about ensuring that every child is supported to achieve their full potential. He believes that strong academic progress is underpinned by a nurturing pastoral environment, where pupils feel valued, confident and challenged to succeed. Through building positive relationships and maintaining high expectations, he is committed to helping every pupil flourish both academically and personally.
When not at school, Mr Hobbins enjoys spending time with his growing family, travelling and playing golf.
Assistant Head of Lower School (Digital Strategy & Technology)
Mr James Rose (Portsmouth University) from Derwentwater Primary School, England
Mr Rose graduated from Portsmouth University with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. After this, he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) specialising in Primary Education at the University of Chichester. However, his passion for educating and motivating others took root early on when he became an ASA certified swimming instructor at sixteen years of age.
After five years of teaching in London, leading as the Science Coordinator and Staff Governor, Mr Rose took the decision to relocate to Hong Kong and joined Harrow in August 2016. His enduring enthusiasm for science and dedication to fostering outstanding STEAM learning experiences led him to hold the positions of Science Coordinator and Lower School STEAM Leader at Harrow. With a drive to positively impact the educational setting, enhance teaching processes, and improve learning outcomes, he undertook a Master’s in Educational Leadership and Management (MA) in 2022.
Mr Rose was appointed as Assistant Head of Lower School (Digital Strategy and Technology) in August 2024. He is eager to further enhance the digital infrastructure and STEAM programs, thereby enriching pupils’ educational journeys in these pivotal fields.
Associate Assistant Head of Lower School (Continuing Professional Development) (Maternity Cover)
Mrs Hannah Russell (Edge Hill University) from Kings School, Al Barsha
Mrs Russell graduated from Edge Hill University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Education (Honours) degree. She began her teaching career at Rushmere Primary School in Suffolk, where she taught in Upper Key Stage 2 before progressing to the role of Head of Key Stage 2. During her five years there, she developed a strong passion for delivering outstanding teaching and learning while ensuring high-quality pastoral care for every pupil.
Seeking to broaden her professional experience, Mrs Russell moved to Dubai in 2015 to teach in a British international school at Kings School, Al Barsha. During her three years there, she gained valuable experience working within an international community and met her husband, Mr Russell (Year 2 Leader).
In 2018, Mrs Russell and her husband continued their international adventure by joining Harrow International School Hong Kong. Since then, she has held a class teacher role and moved between a Year Leader role and Assistant Head of Continuing Professional Development (Maternity Cover), while also starting a family in Hong Kong.
