He remembered having to climb the hill to clear the drains to his house after heavy rainfall. He shared details of his very long life with the students. He told them how he joined the Merchant Navy at the end of the Second World War, spent time in Malaysia and how this had put his education on hold for a while.\u00a0 He eventually went to Brasenose College Oxford when he initially read English but soon swapped to Languages.
